Udio

Experience immediate music generation with enhanced creative input and editing capabilities

Overview

While Udio shares Suno’s emphasis on instant music generation from text prompts, it goes a step further by offering greater creative control and editing functionality.

In our Suno review, we applauded the AI music generator’s ever more impressive results while acknowledging that it’s a shallow tool if you’re at all interested in the craft and creativity of music production. This was more of an observation than a criticism, Suno simply isn’t designed to provide an in-depth production experience, it aims to deliver surprisingly polished music in an instant – all you have to do is use your imagination and come up with a decent prompt. To a large extent, this observation applies equally to Udio which, like Suno, emphasises the immediacy of text to music generation.

While there are other AI music generators to explore, it’s probably fair to say that Suno and Udio are the class leading options right now. And ostensibly they’re pretty similar. Both showcase just how far AI music generation has come in the last year or two, allowing you to magic up a full-blown piece of music with a short text prompt. In both cases, the results are often uncannily realistic and sometimes undeniably catchy. But I’d argue that Udio has the edge, largely thanks to its ability to deliver a more engaging, musically nuanced experience.

Like Suno, Udio is all about immediacy but in my experience the results are slightly more rewarding. If you’re able to incorporate a bit of depth into your prompt by using musical terminology and citing fairly niche styles, you can coax surprisingly nuanced results from the AI. This gives you a sense of agency and control that’s sometimes missing with Suno.

This added degree of control and creative input also extends beyond the initial prompt. Thanks to the addition of editing functionality, Udio allows you to delve a bit deeper into the creative process if you want to refine elements of your creation. We’re hardly talking Ableton here but a small measure of creative agency goes a long way towards making Udio a more engaging user experience that feels a smidgen less disposable than other AI music generators.
