Overview

Ideogram is an AI-powered text to image generator, which is largely free to access.

There are a lot of different AI image generators available, but Ideogram primarily stands out through an easy to use interface which enables you to build prompts at the click of a button. It can also generate very accurate text – something which is still a struggle for other applications.

Key features

  • User Friendly Image Generator: You won’t need to learn prompting to use Ideogram. The key parameters like aspect ratio, colour palette and styles are available in the User Interface.
  • Creations: Any images created are easily accessed in a creations library, which can easily be filtered into public, private and pinned (priority).
  • Canvas: A suite of tools that enables editing and customisation of generations through fill, extend and remix features.
  • Batch: Users can upload batches of prompts through a spreadsheet and generate – although this is premium feature.

Pros

  • User Interface: It is a much more usable application than Midjourney (which is powered by Discord). The front end is similar to the Midjourney website, but you can generate directly from it.
  • Accurate Text Generation: Ideogram is amongst the best, if not the best, image generator for images including text.
  • Batch Generator Saves Time: If an artist has set on a style, then the batch generation can create hundreds of images from a prompt list, which is very efficient.
  • More Flexibility: There appears to be fewer constraints on prompting for subject matter. For instance, DALL-E and Midjourney will not generate political images, but Ideogram will.

Cons

  • Image Quality: While the User Interface (input) is excellent, the image outputs are more variable. Midjourney is still ahead in terms of quality.
  • Flexibility Suggests Lack of Guardrails: While listed as a Pro, this is also a con. Enabling more flexibility is not necessarily a good thing.
